Week 25′s Challenge: Bring Out Your Inner Bourdain

The theme for August’s Change Challenges is “Creativity/ Trying Something New”.
In honor of the Olympics, this week’s challenge is to expand your horizons by learning about a different country and culture. And what better way to do so than to learn and try their food, you know, like Chef Anthony Bourdain? Go to a restaurant or try your hand at ethnic cuisine, read a book by an author of that country, listen to their music, watch a foreign film. We live in such a global community these days that just about anything is researchable by internet.
I started a similar project a little while ago. I printed out an alphabetical list of the world’s countries and slowly went down the list by reading a book by an author of that country and trying its cuisine. For Afghanistan, I read The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini and my husband and I had a date night at Afghan Grill in North Dallas. Both the book and the food were magnificent and for the hour we were at Afghan Grill it felt like we could be in a different country.
The next country on the list was Albania, and while doing some research I found this article from 2001 about the Albanian American community in Dallas: War Torn. I would have never learned about the history and culture of Albania and the local Albanian community if it weren’t for my little project to expand my world view.
This is a fun challenge that may just grow to be a lifelong project. If you all start making a tour around the world, just remember that it all started here.

I am interested in what everyone posts! I love hearing about uncommon foods. If you go to a restaurant and it is good, please share that too!
