Thanks, Suzanne. I think we lose sight of our goal as parents sometimes, and even lose ourselves in the process! But when we're able to just breathe, and "be" we're more able to realize we are in the middle of THE most difficult job on the planet, and we can turn things around a bit. Encouragement is good, and I'm glad this helped you today!

I have two boys (now 20 and 17). Parenting them has been.... wow! This first one was ALWAYS so difficult and the second one so easy. With the first one I have felt like a parenting failure at times but not with the second. I like to equate it with being a chef. You can look like a great chef if you are making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich but trying to make a soufflé is so hard. You can actually have more skills but the soufflé still falls.

What would have helped me would have been to know what red flags to bigger problems would look like. For my first boy, I ended up on a really hard road. I wonder how much of that I might have avoided if I had known early that I needed more help, more training, more knowledge of kids with behavior issues and where to get it. Even some counselors and meds didn't help things. it didn't help until I found someone that helped me learn how to parent such a difficult, by that time, teen. I wish I had a do-over with that.

Somehow I've lost my way as this was how I started out parenting. I've been becoming more aware of just these very things lately and have been trying to remember to see my 7 & 4 yr old as babies again to remind me to be gentler. I accept this as reinforcement that I can return to "my way" by seeing this on your blog today. :-)

I really liked the quote at the end and saved it for future use. Another website attributes it to John Bowlby (http://www.consciouslyparenting.com/building).
